The most promising feature of the Rode NT-49 microphone is the option to choose between three polar patterns. The NT-49 power supply allows users to toggle between omnidirectional, cardioid and figure 8 polar patterns, whilst providing a smooth performance in between. The omnidirectional pattern has equal sensitivity at all angles and therefore picks up sounds from all directions, excellent for hanging above an orchestral performance. A cardioid pattern is more receptive to sound from the front of the microphone and isolates unwanted noise. This polar pattern is more resistant to feedback than omnidrectional and is best suited to loud stages. Finally, a figure 8 setting will give the NT-49 the ability to pick up sound from the front and back but not from the sides. This polar setting can isolate instruments in close proximity, once again ideal for the close quarters within an orchestral performance.
