The Z.Vex Fuzz Factory is renowned for its unpredictable yet highly usable fuzz effect. It can create a huge range of sounds, from traditional sustaining fuzz tones to more experimental sounds. Z.Vex provide recommendations to create different sounds and gives them intriguing names: "High compression fuzz", "Velcro fuzz", "Clean high octave intermodulation", "Smooth fuzz", and "Radio Fuzz". These settings give some indication to the different flavours of fuzz tone that you can achieve.
Interactive Controls
Each control of the Fuzz Factory has an impact on how the other controls respond. This makes it both unpredictable and exciting to experiment with. Here is an overview of what each control does:
- Volume: Output level
- Gate: Removes sound from the end of a sustained note. Can either remove squeals, hiss and buzz, or be set to allow them to ring through. Can help achieve a 'stutter' sound.
- Compress: Adds attack when turned to the left, gives a softer response when turned to the right. Can be set to suddenly raise the level of notes or provide a fat feedback sound.
- Drive: Increases distortion when the pedal is used as a "normal" fuzz. Adjusts feedback pitch when the pedal is set to extreme settings.
- Stab: Use to control feedback pitch. 'Soft' and 'squishy' if set all the way to the left. A control to experiment with.
The Vertical Format
The original Fuzz Factory pedal featured a compact chassis, hand-made circuit, and hand-painted artwork. The next Vexter model used the same construction but with a lower priced silk-screen artwork. This new Vertical model repackages the Vexter unit in a traditional vertical format pedal, ideal for mounting on a pedalboard with other pedals. It features the same high quality construction and great tones in a different chassis for guitarists who prefer the traditional pedal look.
