Featuring eight distortion modes, the TipTop Audio FSU can deliver complete sonic saturation of your sound, from subtle tape saturation to highly aggressive clipping and everything in between. By adding distortion to your signal, you are introducing lots of musical harmonics that can help make your track jump out from a dense mix and stand at the forefront, making it perfect for lead pads, melodies and more. Not only that but by adding distortion, you can add a tremendous amount of punch and depth to your rhythm section by crushing your drums with a clipper or by changing the mode to a tape saturator for your bass lines.
Additionally, FSU offers two additional distortion types that can transform your sound in the form of Ring Mod distortion and Frequency Shift distortion. With Rong Mod, a fine-tuned sine wave is modulated against the amplitude of the signals, creating slight pitch variations that are distorted for thick, deep and stereo sounds. With Frequency Shift, you can operate in dual mode to create independent shift amounts within the left and right channels for distorted warped sounds.
The Glitch effects are time-based effects that manipulate the parameters of delay and pitch, pushing your sounds into creative and extreme territories, making it a great bank of sounds to explore for creative sound design. For instruments without a recognised pitch such as drums, the transient-based nature of their sounds make for the perfect platform to experiment with Glitching effects, such as the Glitch Pitch soundbank. Glitch Pitch shifts randomly and independently within the left and right channels to create interesting timbres that transform even the most basic of drum loops.
Not limited to just pitch glitching, TipTop Audio FSU features a Grain parameter, whereby six grains will randomly move around the live input. Controlled by an LFO, in Grain mode, you can transform your sound from a single mono track to a wide stereo track with a decaying trail that adds dimension and texture to your sound.
The final bank of sounds within FSU is the Sound on Sound (SOS) looping algorithms. This mode employs a traditional and primitive style of looping that was done on vintage tape machines whereby using the SOS mode, the tape machine would remove the 'erase' head and simply add the newly recorded sound on top of the original. In SOS mode, the "Rec/Play" control becomes a VCA for recording into the buffer which loops infinitely for limitless performances. In SOS mode, it's vital that you grab only a small chunk of sound, otherwise you won't be able to accurately loop your performance and will lose all effects of your processing. At the highest setting, there is only 1 second of memory, but lowering the DSP clock via the switch will increase the recording time.
The looping function makes the TipTop Audio FSU the ultimate companion for the experimental, electronic music producer looking to add a completely new dimension to their sound design. Using the looping function in conjunction with external modules makes TipTop Audio FSU extremely versatile for the live musician as now you can create an infinite amount of loops to add rhythmic and melodic complexities to your set to keep your listeners engaged.
