Key Features
There's reverb. And then there's the EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath. Utilising an adjustable cluster of magical delays, the Afterneath takes your sound to an entirely new world. A new universe in fact. Because the moment you begin adjusting the module's controls, your sound will never be the same again.
This 16HP Eurorack version pf the original otherworldly reverberation machine takes the same revered digital algorithms from its pedal predecessors and adds a whole host of powerful features. Nine unique Drag sweep modes, Reflect Send and Reflect Return jacks for flexible patching and processing, and complete CV control over the Drag, Mode, Diffuse, and Length controls. This is the most in-depth Afterneath experience yet.
And that's exactly what this module gives you. An experience like no other. From scattered ping-pong delays, to ethereal atmospheric washes of reverb. And not to mention the almost endless possibilities that lie in between. So become immersed, and discover a vast array of sonic potential.

It's time. The cave is calling you. And once you go in, there's no going back...
So gather your equipment, and prepare to explore. The EarthQuaker Devices Afterneath will take you on an unforgettable journey through unexplored lands. Time and space will twist and warp before you, and the world as you know it will feel like a distant memory. As you climb, fall and float through an otherworldly sonic landscape, you'll feel the shackles that bind your sound to reality slowly begin to slip away. Because now, your auditory power knows no bounds. You're free. So go forth, and let the Afterneath guide you. An entire universe of possibilities awaits.
We can't promise that you'll be able to levitate, you'll have to learn that skill yourself. But with the Afterneath in your rack, it'll certainly feel like you can. Boasting the same revered reverb algorithm that made the pedal versions of the Afterneath stand out from the crowd, you'll become immersed in an ethereal atmosphere with endless twists and turns.
A plethora of digital delay lines give you a potent range of sonic potential. The Drag control lets you bend them to your will, letting you flood your sound with an expansive wash of reverb, scatter it with individual delays, and everything in between. You can take advantage of nine unique selectable and voltage-controllable Drag modes for even more control.
'Unquantized' gives you a smooth, unquantized response over the entire Drag range, whilst 'Unquantized with Slew' provides the same response, but with a musical slew that provides a similar effect to turning the varispeed knob on a vintage tape delay unit. The slew causes the Drag effect to slightly lag behind any knob or CV changes before quickly catching up again.
'Unquantized Volt/Octave' is another unquantized option, but is scaled to align with the 1v/octave curve for melodic modulation of any audio in the buffer. It also lets you control the frequency of self-oscillation. This self-oscillation can be utilised by setting the Reflect and Length controls to high levels. All of the modes (apart from 'Unquantized' and 'Unquantized with Slew') let you utilise the Afterneath as a unique VCO module.
Then there's the scale options. These quantize 1v/octave to the scales in question. Choose from 'Chromatic', 'Major', 'Minor', and 'Pentatonic'. And the final two options, 'Octaves and Fifths' and 'Octaves', will omit everything other than what the mode name states in relation to the original pitch. Both the Drag and Mode can be controlled via CV, and are equipped with dedicated inverting attenuators.
Drag isn't the only control on this magical module. Not at all. In the bottom right, you'll find the Length control. This lets you adjust the decay length of the reverb, whilst the Diffuse control adjusts the spread. Turning the Diffuse knob counter-clockwise sharpens the attack of the reverb, causing a vast sputtering of early reflections. Clockwise moves the reverb to a much more ambient-sounding texture, with more of a unique wash. Both the Length and Diffuse controls can be controlled via CV, and both feature a dedicated inverting attenuator too.
On the top row, you'll find the Dampen control. This lets you adjust the tone of your reverb. Clockwise produces much darker tones with a mellow top-end, whilst counter-clockwise increases the brightness for an ethereal shimmer. If you want to adjust the depth of your reverberation, you can utilise the Reflect control. This adjusts the feedback, and if you set the knob to a higher level in conjunction with the Length control, you can cause the module to begin self-oscillating and utilise it as a VCO.
And finally, the Mix control. This allows you to adjust the overall balance between your dry and wet signals. You can create a sense of a fully-wet reverb without going fully wet, as the level of your input signal slowly reduces as you increase the Mix. But if you do want to go fully wet, simply hit the Dry Kill button, making the module ideal for use as an effect send from your mixer or DAW.
With the Afterneath, anything is possible. With the addition of Reflect Send and Reflect Return jacks, you can utilise the module for external processing of the Reflect feedback path. It also gives you access to a powerful pseudo-stereo effect, allowing you to patch directly from the Reflect Send jack for a wide, immersive stereo image. Plus, you can even use the Reflect Return as an additional input, whilst the Reflect knob will allow you to attenuate any signal patched in here.
