Future Sound Systems have created an exciting range of Eurorack Modules based around ‘The Greistleizer’, a coveted effects unit used and adapted by Chris Carter of Throbbing Gristle. The Greistleizer is seen as a vital component in the pioneering sound of Throbbing Gristle. This has led to four separate Eurorack modules being created, combining iconic components with modern features, allowing you to develop your own sound.
The TG4 Gristleizer Modulator brings another, key component of the Gristleizer effects unit to the world of modular. The TG4 is a JFET-controlled voltage-controlled amplifier that can be controlled by any control source, Eurorack module. The bias control of the TG4 makes it easy to accurately set the initial control point of the amplitude modulation. A control voltage attenuverter for CV2 then provides complete control over how the amplitude is modulated.
The dirt control allows you to get creative with your sound by giving you full control of the JFET stage. When no ‘dirt’ is applied, the TG4 operates as a super-clean VCA. At the other end of the scale, maximum ‘dirt’ distorts the signal significantly, completing altering the input signal.
At 12 o’clock position, the modular behaves exactly like the original VCA circuit of the effects pedal design. The analog design of the TG4 means the JFET often provides harmonic distortion to your audio. A sound sought after by audio enthusiasts, this allows the TG4 to operate as both a VCA and distortion module.
