The last of its kind
Building on the legacy of the SL 4000 E console, the SSL 4000 G arrived in 1987 as the final evolution of the iconic 4000 series. While the E Series had developed a reputation for delivering aggressive and bold sonic textures, engineers and producers increasingly wanted a smoother, more refined sound. Solid State Logic responded by redesigning key components, including the microphone preamps and EQ, to create a console that felt polished and versatile. The result was a platform that quickly became the new studio standard. From London’s Olympic Studios to Los Angeles’ Record Plant, the SSL 4000 G earned a place on countless hit records across genres, trusted by names like Spike Stent, Bob Rock, Dr Dre and MixedByAli.
Smooth and polished EQ
The SSL 4K G plugin stands out for its distinctive EQ section. With the Pink ‘292’ EQ, you can push high and low-mid frequencies to the outer edges of the spectrum, unlocking unique tone shaping possibilities. The variable Q design means subtle boosts or cuts create gentle, musical curves that work especially well on vocals and acoustic sources. In contrast, the Black ‘242’ EQ offers more constant Q behaviour, perfect for focused adjustments like drum processing. The steeper shelves and characteristic resonance of the Pink EQ add a hint of energy and colour that many engineers find essential for bringing tracks to life.
The pinnacle of channel strip compression
To capture the complete character of the G Series, the SSL 4K G plugin models the refined dynamics section in detail. Earlier SSL consoles like the 4000 B were known for their more aggressive compression styles, but the 4000 G delivered a tighter, more controlled response. This smoother dynamic behaviour was crucial in the development of more complex, layered productions. By recreating this precise compression, the plugin helps modern producers manage transients and maintain clarity, even when working with dense arrangements.
More than an input control
The SSL 4K G plugin also includes features that go beyond a typical channel strip. You can engage the 4000 E Series mic preamp, complete with Jensen transformer modelling, to add subtle saturation and warmth to any signal. The variable mic input impedance control, inspired by the FX383 G Series outboard unit, offers further creative tone shaping. Combining these options makes it easy to dial in lo-fi crunch, gentle harmonic colour or clean precision, depending on your project’s needs.
