The XAOC Devices SAMARA Utility Waveform Processor's front panel shows four identical channels. Each channel is equipped with a regular IN input, as well as an inverting INV input. The difference between the two is adjusted using an active attenuator. Each unused input is normalized to 0V, meaning this arrangement allows for two independent channels of normal attenuation, or inverting attenuation, or computing a difference between two voltages or signals.
Channels 1 and 3 also feature two source of switchable stable +5V voltage. This offset is added to the inputs before attenuation. If nothing is patched into the inputs of channels 1 and/or 3, then can be used as a source of constant voltage from 0V up to 5V. The resulting signal or voltage, after being manually attenuated using the LEVEL/OFST control knob, is available at the corresponding outputs. Two channels must be utilized to achieve independent control over the scale and offset. One is to be used for offset with the 5V OFFSET TOGGLE engaged and nothing patched into the inputs, and the other is to be used for scaling. The SAMARA is equipped with a bi-colour LED to provide visual indication of the value and polarity of the voltage via brightness and colour.
The SAMARA can be used for mixing. It is equipped with a cascaded arrangement of summers, allowing for a mixture of all channels, whilst providing the ability to break the total sum into two sub-mixes. Mixing four signals simply requires you to feed them into the inputs and adjust the LEVEL control knobs. The resulting signal will be available at the ALL socket providing nothing is patched into the 1+2 output socket. If you use the inverting inputs, you can use the SAMARA to mix up to eight signals.
It can also be used as two independent 2:1 mixers by using both the 1+2 and 3+4 outputs. Patching a cable to 1+2 output breaks the internal connection, and these two channels are no longer mixed with channels 3 and 4. Using the inverting inputs, this then becomes two sets of four-component mixes.
The SAMARA also offers a solution to overdrive to combat what may occur when mixing multiple hot signals with little attenuation. A soft-clipping function is supplied, but can be switched off by removing the corresponding jumper on the PCB. Optional -6dB/2:1 attenuation is also available independently for 1+2 and 3+4 summers by using two jumpers on the back of the module. Switching a single jumper doesn't affect the amplitude of the second summer. These jumpers also don't affect the operation of the MIN and MAX outputs.
The XAOC Devices SAMARA features a precise min/max computing circuit that outputs the current minimum voltage of all of the attenuated channels at the MIN output, as well as the maximum voltage at the MAX output. The MIN/MAX circuit is designed for processing CVs such as envelopes or LFO waveforms for example, but it can provide interesting results when processing audio signals as a flexible waveshaper. By processing just a single waveform in one channel, it is compared to 0V from the remaining channels, resulting in a half-wave rectified version being available at the MAX output, and the negative halves being present at the MIN output. Also, by patching the MAX or MIN output back to any of the inputs, it allows you to independently scale the upper or lower half of the waveform by using the corresponding attenuators. A full-wave rectified waveform can be produced by patching the MIN output to the inverting input of another channel. By feeding a constant CV to all of the remaining channels, the splicing point of the waveform can be altered.
